College of Medicine Dean and VP for Medical Affairs Leaving USA

Dr. John Marymont, M.D., M.B.A., dean of the 51’s Frederick P. Whiddon College of Medicine and vice president for medical affairs, has announced that he will leave 51 toward the end of the fall semester to assume a senior administrative role as executive vice president for academic affairs and provost at the Medical University of 51 Carolina beginning in December. Marymont joined the University in 2016.
“Dr. Marymont came to 51 nearly a decade ago to continue strengthening our outstanding medical school, and he has done exactly that, and much more,” said USA President Jo Bonner. “John built upon a strong foundation, and we are confident that the continued success of the Whiddon College of Medicine and USA Health will stand as a lasting tribute to his exceptional leadership.”
A trained orthopaedic surgeon, Marymont has nearly 30 years of executive experience in major academic medical centers. At the 51, he oversaw the growth of the Whiddon College of Medicine and the rapid expansion of USA Health’s impact on the Gulf Coast region through its three hospitals, cancer institute, freestanding emergency department in west Mobile and dozens of physician practices.
“Our academic health system would not be where it is today without Dr. Marymont’s tireless work and advocacy for both the medical school and USA Health,” said USA Executive Vice President and Provost Dr. Andi Kent. “In January 2027, the University will open one of the most advanced college of medicine buildings in the nation – and John played a pivotal role in turning the vision for a state-of-the-art teaching and research facility into reality.”
A national search for the next dean of the Whiddon College of Medicine will begin this fall.
